Dear Bateman Families,

Greetings! It gives me great pleasure, as Assistant Principal of Newton Bateman School, to welcome you to the 2011-2012 school year. Bateman is a tremendously dynamic learning environment that is steeped in rich traditions while priding itself on meeting the diverse needs of all school children. The staff is dedicated to each and every student and works together with parents to ensure children are challenged, engaged, and successful. We are committed to educational excellence and work diligently to ensure that curriculum and instructional practices allow for individual growth and are in line with best practice.

Bateman School will be launching and further phasing in greater integration of technology in the classrooms.  Again, it is our belief that great teaching is "the heart of our school” and technology will never supplant it.  Bateman’s technology integration program for the 2011-2012 school year will better serve the needs of the students. Kindergarten classrooms will be utilizing ELMOs and several more of primary classrooms will have a Promethean Board installed.  Please check the Promethean Planet link on our web page for further information and details on its capabilities.

We are also beginning a new enrichment program, in partnership with the Gilder Lehrman Institute and the Chicago History Museum. We the People will provide many advantages for Bateman students.  The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History is a 501c (3) nonprofit organization supporting the study and love of American history.   We the People’s mission will be to:

1.      First, allow students who are interested in U. S. History or Legal Education an opportunity and a venue thorough which students can expand their knowledge base and horizons.

2.      Second, allow time for students to receive additional instruction in the area of American History.  The seminars will allow students to work on independent student projects under the guidance of teachers, allowing students to explore areas of interest in the genres of history that is present for each particular grade. We the People will meet four Saturdays during the months of October and November.

Finally, for the second time our 8th grade students will return to New York City.  If you are interested in attending this trip please see Ms. Amy for availability. The trip will include three college campus tours (Columbia, Princeton, and West Point), a visit to the Guggenheim and National History Museum, a Broadway play, and a visit to the 9-11 site. With all the on-goings, I'm sure you will find your experience at Bateman a truly extraordinary one. We pride ourselves on being a successful school that provides a:

  • Curriculum that is relevant, challenging, integrative, and exploratory;
  • Multiple learning and teaching approaches that respond to student diversity and multiculturalism;
  • Assessment and evaluation programs that promote quality learning;
  • Organizational structures that support meaningful relationships and learning;
  • School-wide efforts and policies that foster health, wellness, and safety provided by Ms Watson, Mr. Nowak and Officer Medina;
  • Multifaceted guidance and support services provided by Dr. Camilo and her team.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I look forward to working with you to provide the best educational opportunities for our children. See you during our Open House on September 22, 2011, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Yours truly,

J. Antonio Jimenez
